DESIGN GUIDE
Five rules keep a sublimated jersey looking new: wash cold, inside out; no bleach and no fabric softener; never iron the print; air-dry in shade; and wash it soon after the game rather than letting sweat sit. The print itself can’t peel — it’s dyed into the fibre — so care is really about protecting the fabric.
Cold water, gentle cycle — heat is polyester's only real enemy; hot washes can relax the fibres and dull the surface. Inside out — protects the face fabric from zipper abrasion in the drum. No bleach, no softener — bleach attacks the dye chemistry; softener coats the fibres and murders moisture-wicking. No iron on the print — remember, sublimation happens at ~200°C; your iron can literally re-activate the dye. If a jersey needs de-creasing, iron the inside on low. Shade-dry — polyester dries fast anyway; direct summer sun adds UV stress for no benefit.
Designer's tip: complexity is free with sublimation — a gradient costs the same as a plain kit. Spend your restraint, not your budget.
Not from washing — the dye is inside the fibre, so there's no surface layer to wear away, which is exactly why we can say 'never peels, cracks or fades' about sublimation and mean it. What people read as 'fading' on old kit is usually fabric-surface abrasion from years of tumble-drying, or a cheap non-sublimated print that was always going to crack. Skip the dryer and a sublimated kit's colours outlast the elastic in its hem.
Polyester doesn't absorb sweat but bacteria can sit on it — so rinse or wash soon after playing rather than leaving kit balled in a bag overnight, which is where permanent odour actually comes from. A 30-minute cold soak with a little detergent beats any hot cycle. Store dry and hung; folding is fine, but never store damp.
Pilling under the arms, a snag from velcro, elastic gone soft — those are fabric life, not print failure, and they arrive years earlier on low-GSM bargain kit. If your team's jerseys are ageing fast, the fix is fabric weight, not washing technique: see our fabric guide for what GSM buys you.
